Chapter 13:
Jax
Today went better than I could’ve imagined.
I slipped my pants and underwear off and threw them into the hamper before digging through my dresser for a new pair. I smiled to myself. She’s fucking amazing. I feel like a teenager with my first crush. I threw my clothes on and headed for the kitchen. Just as I was coming around the corner, I heard the front door shut.
The kitchen was empty, so I headed for the door. Sam must be on the porch. Then I noticed it. My notebook was turned around to face the barstool.
“Oh, fuck,” I breathed.
I flung the door open, and my heart dropped.
Sam was running at full speed through the clearing. She looked back, and I saw the betrayal in her eyes as the tears coursed down her cheeks.
“Sam!” I’ve fucked up big time.
I leaped over the railing onto the cold ground. My knee protested at the landing, but I straightened and ran as fast as I could to try to make up the distance between us. She’d almost reached the edge of the clearing.
My bare feet dug into the soft grass as I ran.
“Sam, it’s not what you think!” I yelled, hoping she would stop and listen to me. I was gaining on her. She’s fast, but my much longer legs were eating up the distance. I was only about thirty feet behind her when she disappeared into the forest.
“Sam, please!” I tried again, not wanting her to get hurt.
I charged in behind her, as she desperately pushed her way through the underbrush.
She was only about fifteen feet in front of me, so I slowed my pace to match hers.
“Sam,” I said, holding my hands up.
She spun. Her eyes were wild and unfocused. She held a large branch as if it were a weapon. “I won’t go back,” she hissed.
“Oh, sweetheart, I’m not taking you anywhere. You’re safe here.” I met her tear-filled eyes. The hurt and betrayal showed through. I kept my hands up in a nonthreatening way.
I took a few steps closer, and her eyes flared with determination. “Noooooo! I won’t go back.” She swung the log at me. I was still far enough away she missed.
“I’m not taking you back.” My tone was calm.
Her eyes blazed. “Liar! You’re working for him.” Her eyes darted around, looking for an escape. She was in fight-or-flight mode, and she would do whichever she could.
“Sam, sweetheart. Look at me.”
Her eyes swung back to mine.
“The sheriff.” I saw her confusion. “Sheriff Zane asked me to look up a name. My other job is running background searches on people. Finding things out. He didn’t tell me why. I ran a search on the name he gave me this morning, and I needed some basic information to do a more in-depth search. That’s why I have his address and phone number.”
She stared at me for a short time. Her eyes cleared just for a split second before she lunged at me, trying to catch me off guard. I
